Fit for Duty: CrossFit Workout Plans For Police Officers

Police officers CrossFit trainingCrossFit’s programs are becoming increasingly common for law enforcement professional. Police officers face many special fitness challenges that are not easily practiced through one type of sport or exercise. The truth is that being a police officer can be a very physical job, and not only is physical fitness an advantage when it comes to doing the job, working out regularly can help you learn how to train your body to release stress through rigorous physical exercise. You’ll develop strength, precision, and flexibity with a CrossFit workout.

The Match 2003 issue of the CrossFit Journal showed a plethora of benefits for the Florida Police Corps Program when they began to incorporate CrossFit into their recruits’ fitness regimens. The outfit was seeking training protocols that produced fitness and performance results above average — they were seeking a fitness solution that could be used to improve the performance of the cadets and teach them valuable tactics for physical combat and restraint. Police Corps trainers also wanted to reduce injuries among their police force from both the training and the implementation, and get their recruits into peak physical condition for their fitness exams.

Since that time period, law enforcement agencies across the country have adopted CrossFit trainings and many members of the armed forces and other law enforcement bodies rely on the regiment to help them stay in peak condition.

Why is Crossfit training so effective in training law enforcement to meet the physical and mental demands of their jobs on a daily basis? There are three core concepts that help make these workouts so effective:

  1. Constant variation. This is a vital component of training your mind and body to think and act quickly as one. Let’s face it; police work and pursuit are always about the unexpected. You’ll never have the same experience twice when executing an arrest warrant or pursuing a crime in progress. Movement on-the-job is constantly varied, so it makes sense for you, as a law enforcement officer, to train your body in a variety of ways. The idea of CrossFit training is to vary your reps, exercises, and time dedicated to a task. It will also help prevent boredom.
  2. Functional movement. You’ll also learn the best way to move when the way you move is applicable in your real-world duties. This means that you’ll need to be prepared for stair climbing, lifting objects, crouching, lunging, and other types of movements that you’ll need to use on a daily basis. Focusing on this type of movement also helps to prevent injuries.
  3. High intensity workouts. Intense, sweat-inducing, heart-pumping workouts should feel like a workout; you’re going to be tired and need to replenish through rest and rehydration.

If you find yourself injured or struggling to recover from an intense workout period, you may have overdone it. Get back to the basics of your regimen and focus on technique if you find yourself struggling.

One of the best aspects of CrossFit training is that it doesn’t require a lot of fancy equipment or a gym membership. There are plenty of resources available online to help you with your fitness routine and many ways to adapt your routine to fit your personal fitness needs and goals.
